About Maggie’s War
As World War II ramps up, Maggie Hedley finds herself back in her hometown of Burlington, North Carolina. Desperate for her fiance’s safe return and trying to stay out of her mother’s way, Maggie is delighted when the best friend she lost eight years before shows up back in town.
Sarah, in her new city clothes and full of secrets, isn’t so sure she wants to risk a friendship with a white woman in this segregated town, even if it’s Maggie.
Then Sarah’s brother is killed at Tuskegee, and their shared grief brings them together. Meanwhile, the secrets of that summer eight years before are coming to light, threatening to end both women’s futures.
When Sarah asks Maggie to do the impossible, Maggie must make a choice between everything she’s been taught to believe and what she knows to be true.
After all, they’re not children anymore. And a white woman and a Black woman can hardly be friends in the Jim Crow South.
